Edex (alprostadil) is used to treat erectile dysfunction in adult men. The active ingredient, alprostadil, is marketed under a variety of brand names, all of which produce similar results; it relaxes the muscles and blood vessels in the penis, which improves blood flow.

What to Expect from Edex

• Clean and dry hands and penis.
• Inject the medication directly into the side of the penis, avoiding any obvious blood vessels.
• The injection should be delivered slowly over 5 to 10 seconds; do not press plunger down quickly.
• Injection should be easy and should not produce serious pain or burning; if injection is difficult or painful, reposition the syringe.
• Apply pressure to the injection site for 2 to 5 minutes to prevent bruising.
• Alternate injection sites with each use to prevent skin irritation.
• Do not use alprostadil more than once every 24 hours or more than 3 times a week.

Sitting, standing, or walking will help an erection to form; laying down immediately after administration will make it more difficult for blood to flow to the penis.

The product may be used indefinitely if the underlying cause of the erectile dysfunction is not discovered and resolved. A small percentage of men find it becomes less effective over time, or simply don't respond to treatment well from the start; if this happens, speak with a doctor about other options--there are many out there.

Warnings & Side Effects

Men with certain preexisting conditions should not buy Edex without first discussing potential risks with a doctor:

• History of priapism (prolonged erections)
• History of bleeding problems (such as poor blood clotting)
• Use of blood thinners
• Penile implants or deformities
• Conditions which cause thickened blood
• Inflammation, infection or other issues in the penis or kidneys
• Any condition which makes intercourse inadvisable

In otherwise healthy men, side effects are usually very mild and localized, including mild irritation, bruising, or scarring at the injection site. Injections may produce very mild pain or burning; if pain or burning is severe, discontinue use until speaking with a doctor. Some men also experience dizziness or flu-like symptoms after using Edex, which are also not cause for concern unless severe.

This product should not be used in women, or in boys who have not yet reached sexual maturity.
